Recent Updates (Feb 2025)

Please see below for a brief overview of updates related to water contamination at both the local and federal level.

  1. Duxbury received the latest report on PFAS in town wells: 5 of the 7 wells exceed the EPA’s MCL limit.
  2. Environmental Working Group (EWG) has issued a report on the drinking water quality in Duxbury.
    • The report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO).
    • While Duxbury tap water is in compliance with federal standards, EWG found that out of 30 total contaminants, 11 exceeded their health guidelines–including one by 5,000x.
    • Their website (linked above) also includes helpful information about different consumer filter options.
  3.  While the EPA’s new standards for PFAS contamination remain in effect (which nearly all of Duxbury’s wells exceed), Trump has shelved a proposed regulation that would have made manufacturers share the burden of cleanup and force industrial manufacturers with PFAS in their wastewater to include treatment/removal before discharge.
