Update Regarding Groundwater Sampling at the Duxbury Landfill and McNeil Dump Site

As part of assessment activities associated with the Duxbury Landfill and McNeil Dump site on Mayflower Street, test-pitting, groundwater well installation and sampling, and soil gas sampling activities were conducted to assess the McNeil Dump site. These activities were conducted from May through July, 2022. Of the groundwater samples collected from four monitoring wells installed, the results revealed elevated concentrations of PFAS above regulatory standards within one of the samples, detectable concentrations below standards in another, and no detectable concentrations from two other samples. Previous groundwater samples collected from the Duxbury Landfill monitoring well network in May 2022 also revealed various concentrations of PFAS above regulatory standards. Based on the results of these assessment activities, additional assessment activities will need to be conducted in order to understand the nature and extent of overall impacts.

Our potable groundwater resources are critical for Duxbury water consumption, and municipal water supply wells are located within a half mile of the Duxbury Landfill and McNeil Dump site. Understanding the potential for impacts from these sources of contamination will help us determine if additional protective or remedial measures are warranted for the municipal water supply system.
